Night Stand Design

I have been trying to conceptualize a new design for a night stand. I am going to build a pair of matching nightstands that will compliment a yet to be built bedroom set. The woods that I would like to use are mesquite and Arizona walnut. The construction will consist of through dovetails, half blind dovetails, sliding dovetails, integral draw bore pinned mortise and tenons, piston fit drawers and floating raised panels.

In the model I have included two different leg designs which I am considering for the base. The dimensions are 28″ tall, 29″ wide and 18″ deep. Each drawer is 5 1/2″ tall.

Here is a version with walnut pins and proud dovetails on the drawers.

One of the largest considerations I make when designing a piece of furniture is that form and function must be one in the same. I want the piece to be attractive in appearance as well as joinery and construction. It is important that each piece is done in the most efficient and simple way possible. Too often, I notice components to furniture which are not fluidly integral to the whole and reflect a lack of passion in the design and construction.

Any opinions you have (good or critical) are greatly appreciated. I am also curious as to which leg is more attractive and fitting to the design.
